Bristol Training Centre, Admiral House, Achieves ISO Environmental Certification

Following assessment by external auditors - Det Norske Veritas (DNV), as part of Logica's environmental programme, our Bristol training centre, Admiral House, has been awarded the Environmental Management standard ISO 14001.

ISO 14001 is the International Standard which "specifies requirements for an environmental management system" and looks at what an organisation does to manage the impact on the environment caused by its activities and services. This standard requires an enduring commitment to comply with relevant environmental legislation, prevent pollution and show continuous improvement in environmental performance. Although championed, and managed, by our Facilities Manager Graham Banfield, the entire Admiral House team played an important role in ensuring the success of the audit.

Staff based at Admiral House (both MOD and Logica) have demonstrated their long term commitment to establishing and promoting a sustainable recycling programme, utilised by staff, visitors and students alike. Initiatives introduced (since 2005) include colour coded waste bins in all areas (including lecture rooms) for paper, drinks cans and plastic bottles, battery collection points, fluorescent lamp collection, toner cartridge recycling, catering spent oil recycling and waste food control records. This has resulted in a 50% reduction in our non-recyclable waste, which has enabled us to reduce our facility waste bin requirement from two 1100 litre bins to one (for a 160 person facility).

Energy consumption has also been reduced; with low cost solutions such as timer switches on all printers which ensure power down after office hours and investment in rechargeable batteries for all our classroom and office equipment.

DA-CMT staff have played an important role in achieving this award. Due to the large number of students passing through the building, it takes a continuous effort from all involved to ensure that recycling and energy saving opportunities are highlighted and utilised on a daily basis throughout the year - not just during Environmental Week.
